It’s easy to become hyper-focused on the standards and content-based skills of a particular discipline, especially when we feel as though we are operating in a silo in the virtual world; however, a more expansive perspective of teaching that focuses on developing 21st century skills will only enhance student learning in a given content area. There is a need to arm students with noncognitive, or 21st Century, skills to prepare them for a more STEM-based job market. No longer are we infallible…or ‘the be all and end all’ of education. The term “21st century learning” has been used to refer to abilities students must master, such as problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, and digital literacy.
